I went to the Vatican this noon to listen to the Pope deliver his “Urbi et Orbi” (Latin for “to the city and to the world”) message and blessing. There´s a pic and video after the jump.
Benedict XVI began by saying that Christmas is a day of great hope – it is a day on which the great light of Christ shines forth. He prayed that this great light may bring consolation to those who live in the darkness of poverty, injustice and war.
The Pope said that his thoughts turn especially to those suffering poverty, injustice and war in Darfur, Somalia, Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Iraq, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the Holy Land, and to many other countries experiencing economic, social, and political crisis. He prayed that the Child Jesus may bring relief to their suffering and that political leaders may have wisdom and courage to seek just and humane solutions to their country´s problems.
He ended his message by greeting the world Merry Christmas in different languages, including of course the Filipino language. The complete text of the papal message can be read here.
