my dad is half-mangyan, but he’s never proud of it. in fact, it’s something he’s always embarassed about. we see them as those people who knock at our gates in our old house in batangas during Christmas season. They gather by the plaza, eating the fruits of their begging: boiled eggs and prized “sardinas.” ironically, they refer to us, damuhong (plain-dwellers) as sandugo. reading your blogger’s prayer in mangyan (which mangyans po, padre?) makes me reflect on how little do i know of my own heritage. It’s a reminder for me that i am indeed a sandugo with my brother mangyans.
halo Father,
just concerned over email i received claiming that World War III will start in end of July 2008. Got this from a certain Nono Torribio (catholic.apocalypse@gmail.com). It seems he has a collation of Catholic prophecies pointing to this year (2008) as the start of world war III. am a father of 5 so i’m quite concerned by such news especially that we are currently experiencing global food and oil crisis.
Please advice.

This is truly amazing and I am overjoyed that a Mangyan translated this prayer. Yet, this is not too surprising for I always have faith on the Mangyans, especially those belonging to the Hanunuo tribe. Not many are aware of how fascinating is their history and anyone would be impressed with the Hanunuo-Mangyan poetry and their truly remarkable syllabic script. Yes, they too love poetries and I would say most of them are romantic by nature. So single men out there, you can learn a lot from the Mangyans on how to write good love letters and poems to pursue your women.
To Elizabeth Sodayi, congratulations to you. May you be an inspiration to our brother Mangyans. May the good Lord help the Mangyans in their plight as He knows that they are one of the truly honest and trusting people. God bless you and all our “sandugo” or kapatid.
@ brotherutoy – I was told that the author is from the hanunuo tribe. So this prayer must also be in the hanunuo language.
@ lex – be positive and trust in the grace and goodness of the Lord. Knowing that we have a loving Father, I do not think the world will end soon.
