Prayer of Saint Francis (Reloaded)

I wrote this prayer while preparing for a talk on using social media for evangelization. It is not an entirely new prayer as it is based on the traditional prayer of Saint Francis. I wanted to build on the Franciscan prayer as I wanted mine to be both traditional and modern, both familiar and fresh. The main idea behind this prayer is that in a world obssessed with sensationalism, wealth, enterntainment and individualism, every Christian is called to live a life rooted in simplicity, contemplation, authenticity, the desire to serve and other Gospel values.

PRAYER OF ST. FRANCIS (RELOADED)

Make me a channel of your peace
Where there is sensationalism, let me bring your truth
Where there is flaunting of wealth, your simplicity, Lord
And in the midst of noise, prayerful silence

Make me a channel of your peace
To those obsessed with entertainment , let me bring joy
To the vain and the greedy, your humility, Lord
And to the virtual world, authenticity

O Master grant that I may never seek
Quantity over quality
Individualism over solidarity
Anonymity over transparency

Make me a channel of your peace
It is in friending that we initiate dialogue
In networking that we create positive relations
And in the giving of self in love that we truly communicate

A Facebook User’s Prayer

God Our Father,

Direct our lives that we may use Facebook to proclaim Your Word. Grant that our wall posts may serve as a source of inspiration and joy to our friends.

Guide us as we update our status and let all our comments be pleasing to You. Make us realize that we need to read the Bible more often than we check our news feed. May we find more time correcting our bad habits than editing our profile pics.

Lead us in Your wisdom that we may we be more concerned about following Your precepts than about the size of our friends list. May we poke others only because we want to show we care.

Deliver us from privacy problems, from spam applications and from the temptation to post other people’s images, ideas and videos without permission. Allow us to remain in an open relationship with You, to bear much fruit, and to give glory to Your name.

We ask all these through Christ, Our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for the Victims of the Maguindanao Massacre

Father, you are a loving God. We pray for those who have died in the Maguindanao massacre. We pray that you may carry their souls to a place of no pain – to heaven where there is only joy and comfort. We also pray for the loved ones they have left behind. Heal their broken hearts, Compassionate Father, and give them strength in their despair. We also include in our prayer those who have been wounded physically, emotionally and spiritually – may they become whole again and their trust in others restored. And may we all learn from this and that despite this tragedy, we may still commit ourselves to become channels of your peace. Amen.

Prayer for those Affected by Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana)

Loving Father, you are our shelter and our hope. We come to you with hearts full of trust in your love and mercy.

We pray for the victims of tropical storm Ondoy. May those who have lost homes and properties find shelter, enough food and clean water. Comfort those who are traumatized and those who are grieving for the loss of their families, neighbors and friends. Bless those who are sick and those who are injured that their health may be restored and their wounds cured. May you lead all who are stranded or lost back to those who love them. Guide the hands of the rescuers, the doctors and nurses and other volunteers and give them strength as they serve others with joy.

May this calamity bring people closer together, to help each other and to care for the environment. Give us the faith, the hope and the love to carry on. This we ask through Jesus Christ, Our Lord.

Use Twitter for Evangelization

Twitter is the third most used social network in the planet. It is reported that it gets 55 million monthly visits from all over the world. I first tweeted in October 2007. My very first tweets were updates of my whereabouts and what-abouts. Then in May 2008 I began tweeting inspirational quotes from well-known authors. Five months later I started posting biblical passages as tweets. Last July 16th I posted my first prayer tweet. Since then I’ve been tweeting nothing else but prayers.

My Twitter and Facebook accounts are linked in such a way that every time I post something on my Twitter account, the tweet automatically appears as my status in Facebook. Many of my Facebook friends respond to the prayer tweets, and based on their comments and on the “who likes this” list I feel that the online prayers have made a difference in their lives. Some of them respond with an “Amen” or another prayer. While some others ask me to include them in my prayers. There are also those who say that they will live out the prayers.

The prayer tweets have not only deepened my relationships with my online friends, they have also allowed me to minister to them. Praying for and praying with people can be as authentic an experience online as it is in the real world.

This experience convinced me that Twitter is a useful tool for evangelization. I am aware that a good number of people are already using Twitter to spread God’s Word. If you are planning to use Twitter to evangelize others, here are some topics/themes that you might want to focus on:

1. Passages from the Bible
2. Thanksgiving prayers and intercessions
3. Quotes from saints and pontiffs
4. Inspiring words from Christian authors
5. Excerpts from Catholic Social Teachings and other Church documents
6. Your personal reflection on faith and life

Praying Is Good

Although I have never thought that this would be the outcome, the best thing about the controversy surrounding “A Blogger’s Prayer” is that bloggers – both theists and atheists – are now discussing prayer. Praying really does wonders.

I accepted the Philippine Blog Awards (PBA) organizers’ invitation to lead the invocation with the knowledge that those present would be a mix of believers and non-believers, theists and atheists, Christians and non-Christians. Since I was invited to do an invocation, I could not presume that I was there just to ask everybody to stand in silence for a while. Continue reading
