Christian Music Tuesday: “Forgiven” by Sanctus Real

Our God is a forgiving Father. The whole purpose of giving us His only begotten Son is to facilitate forgiveness. The song “Forgiven” stresses that “I don’t have to carry the weight of who I’ve been, cause I’m forgiven.” God forgives us because we are a treasure in the arms of Christ.

Sanctus Real is a north American Christian rock band composed of Matt Hammitt (lead vocalist, guitar), Chris Rohman (lead guitar), Dan Gartley (bass), Pete Prevost (guitar), and Mark Graalman (drums). Since their formation in the year 1996, they have released eight albums (3 through an independent label and 5 through the Sparrow record label). The song “Forgiven” is from their latest album “Pieces of a Real Heart”.

Forgiven

by Sanctus Real

Well the past is playing with my head
And failure knocks me down again
I’m reminded of the wrong
That I have said and done
And that devil just wont let me forget

In this life
I know what I’ve been
But here in your arms
I know what I am

I’m forgiven
I’m forgiven
And I don’t have to carry
The weight of who I’ve been
Cause I’m forgiven

My mistakes are running through my mind
And I’ll relive my days, in the middle of the night
When I struggle with my pain, wrestle with my pride
Sometimes I feel alone, and I cry

In this life
I know what I’ve been
But here in your arms
I know what I am

When I don’t fit in and I don’t feel like I belong anywhere
When I don’t measure up to much in this life
Oh, I’m a treasure in the arms of Christ ‘cause

The following are homilies, images, clipart, videos, and multimedia slides you might find useful for your celebration of the 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year C).

In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus tells the parable of the Good Samaritan. In the parable, a traveling Jew is beaten, robbed, and left half dead along the road. First a priest and then a Levite come by, but both avoid the injured man. Finally, a Samaritan comes by. Samaritans and Jews generally do not like each other, but the Samaritan helps the Jew.

HOMILIES

  • Go and do likewise [Daily Scripture Readings & Meditations]
What does Jesus’ story tell us about true love for one’s neighbor? First, we must be willing to help even if others brought trouble on themselves through their own fault or negligence. Second, our love and concern to help others in need must be practical. Good intentions and showing pity, or emphathizing with others, are not enough. And lastly, our love for others must be as wide and as inclusive as God’s love. God excludes no one from his care and concern. God’s love is unconditional. Read more…
  • 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time – Year C [Kairos]
The love which Jesus has for us, the love which caused him to make us, the Church, into his own body, is the same love he shares with the Father. This is the love to which we are all called. We must love all as he loves all. If, therefore, there is nothing and no one outside God’s love, how can we even dare suggest there is someone outside our love, someone who is not our neighbour? Read more…
  • 15th Sunday of Ordinary Time [Catholic Doors]
Our neighbours are all around us. Our obligations consist of raising our children in the faith, providing for the homeless, feeding the hungry, helping the refugees and the immigrants, tending to the seniors, adopting the orphans, defending those who are persecuted, bringing the Gospel to the prisoners, reaching out to the prostitutes, etc… These are our neighbours, my neighbours, your neighbours. What we do for them, we do for the Lord Jesus. By reaching out to those in need, we reach out to Jesus. By refusing to extend our friendship to those in need, we are withholding our friendship from Jesus. Read more…

HOMILIES

  • The Harvest is Plentiful… [Daily Scripture Readings & Meditations]
When Jesus commissioned seventy of his disciples to go on mission, he gave them a vision of a great harvest for the kingdom of God. Jesus frequently used the image of a harvest to convey the coming of God’s reign on earth. The harvest is the fruition of labor and growth – beginning with the sowing of seeds, then growth, and finally fruit for the harvest. Read more…
  • 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time – Year C [Kairos]
Jesus again has to help them get the perspective right. It was not human success that mattered, but rather that their names were written in heaven. The challenge for us is to check our baggage and see whether anything is weighing us down and preventing us from experiencing the freedom that comes to the disciples of Jesus. Read more…
  • 14th Sunday – Year C (July 4th) [Oxford University Catholic Chaplaincy]
There is enormous joy in being disciples of Jesus; but that does not mean that we live in a magic world which no pain ever approaches. Next Sunday’s readings are all quite clear-eyed about the suffering that we can expect; but they know that it is not the end of the story, because God is in charge of our world. Read more…

HOMILIES

  • No One Who Looks Back is Fit for the Kingdom of God [Daily Scripture Readings & Meditations]
When the Lord calls us to follow him he gives us the grace to put aside everything that might keep us from doing his will. Loyalty to Jesus requires sacrifice, letting go of my will for God’s will. A would-be disciple responded by saying, I must first go and bury my father, that is, go back home and take care of him until he died. Jesus certainly did not mean that we should refuse to care for others, especially our parents in their old age. His startling statement, however, made clear that God must always be first in our lives. If we love him above all, then everything else will fall into its proper place and time. Read more…
  • Homily for the 13th Sunday of Ordinary Time, Year C [CACINA]
How should we treat people of other faiths or cultures, or people who have hurt us, or people we are afraid of. Should we allow division because of tradition or should we try to find ways to understand and empathize with these people. We are people who are called, but are there people who are called to a different way? Is there only one way to follow Christ? We are called today to consider this in our own lives and battle against our own prejudices and our own fears, and to put into practice Jesus’ law of love that Paul tells us of today, and this is the Good News we need to find this week! The following are homilies, images, clipart, video, and multimedia slides you might find useful for your celebration of the 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year C).

In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus dines in a Pharisee’s house. Upon learning that he was at table in the house of the Pharisee, a sinful woman in the city comes to Jesus and weeps at his feet and bathes his feet with her tears. She then wipes her tears with her hair and anoints Jesus with oil. All these the woman did to show her love to Jesus and to express sorrow for her sins.

HOMILIES

  • Which of Them Will Love Him More? [dailyscripture.net]
Why did a woman with a bad reputation approach Jesus and anoint him at the risk of ridicule and abuse by others? The woman’s action was motivated by one thing, and one thing only, namely, her love for Jesus and her gratitude for forgiveness… She took the most precious thing she had and spent it all on Jesus. Her love was not calculated but extravagant. In a spirit of humility and heart-felt repentance, she lavishly served the one who showed her the mercy and kindness of God. Read more…
  • Eleventh Sunday: Treasuring Forgiveness [www.st.ignatius.net]
God’s forgiveness is offered not just to us and to those whom we know who have hurt us, but also to those whom we don’t really know but whom we rather avoid. Perhaps they appear to be in the underbelly of polite society. Maybe they are people who have come to the Lord for forgiveness. Maybe they are people who need us to lead them to forgiveness. We are not called to arrogance. We are called to holiness. Read more…
  • The Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time [onlineministries.creighton.edu]
The Gospel-reading ends quite significantly with the naming of those women who were also close friends and disciples of Jesus. In the culture of the times, women’s power was limited. Jesus invites, welcomes and dignifies them by His open embracing of their presence. They are finding in this holy Man a power that is used – not abused. In the Kingdom which Jesus preaches women are empowered to give Him birth, care, and sent to tell His good news from the touching experiences of their own lives. Read more…

Pentecost Sunday: Video, Homilies, Images and Multimedia Slides

The following are homilies, images, clipart, video, toon and multimedia slides you might find useful for your celebration of Pentecost Sunday (Year C). The word Pentecost comes from the Ancient Greek “pentekoste” which literally means the fiftieth day. It commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples of Jesus.

In this Sunday’s gospel, Jesus came and stood in the midst of his disciples and said to them, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”

READINGS

FIRST READING: Acts 2:1-11
PSALM: Ps 104:1, 24, 29-30, 31, 34
SECOND READING: 1 Cor 12:3b-7, 12-13 or Rom 8:8-17
GOSPEL: Jn 20:19-23 or Jn 14:15-16, 23b-26

HOMILIES

  • Forgiveness and the Spirit Within [www.bible.claret.org]
What happened on Pentecost was similar to what happened in the battle between Goliath and David. The disciples of Jesus were looking for an external victory. They wanted Jesus to drive out the Roman occupying power and take over political supremacy. All they could see was external. But at Pentecost they became aware that the power was within, that the message of Christ was about internal attitude, it was about uniting and removing barriers of language and race and domination. • Pentecost Sunday [www.catholicmatters.com]
God the Father created us with the intention and plan to raise us up to adopted sonship with him. God the Son took human nature so that we might share in the divinity.
