5 Christian Alternatives to FaceBook

Having more than 300 million active users and counting, Facebook is no doubt the most popular and fastest growing social network in the planet right now. But Facebook is NOT the only social network out there. Nor even the best.

If you want to be in a faith-based social network, you might want to take a look at these Christian alternatives to Facebook.

xt3

XT3
This is my personal favorite. The administrators of XT3 claim that this social network is “so good even the Pope uses it”. Aside from the usual profile pages, XT3 includes unique features such as prayer walls, diocesan homepages, events and projects. There are even priests who make themselves available online to answer all those who are curious about the Catholic faith.

4marks

4marks
The main goal of 4marks is to build Catholic communities online as well as to provide valuable resources to help people to deepen their faith. It offers weekly trivia, daily lessons, information on the Saints and other interactive content. This social network only allows content that are “worthy of praise” and thus all reviews articles, events, videos, and other member-submitted content are reviewed before they appear online.

faithout

Faithout
Faithout calls it social fellowshipping instead of the oft-used social networking. The fellowships created in Faithout are based around a company, region, church, ministry or school. In Faithout, users are invited to join the fellowships that reflect their real-life communities to learn more about the people who work, live, study or worship around them.

faithfreaks

FaithFreaks
The purpose of FaithFreaks is to glorify God by providing an alternative social network that is safe, clean, friendly, and Christ-centered. FaithFreaks also aims to help its users build upon their faith and beliefs by providing resources to help them focus and grow in their Christian walk.

myfaithhaven

Myfaithhaven
The special features of Myfaithhaven include free access to a good number of Christian music, Christian books, Christian church groups and Christian Lyrics pages.

VIDEO: Prepare Yourself for Eternal Bliss

Life is more about preparation than performance. Some performances last only in a matter of seconds but preparations could take years. Think of an Olympian who runs the 100-meter race in less than a minute. In order to dash that fast, a sprinter must train his whole life. Or think of Manny Pacquiao whose fights last less than an hour but demands thousands of hours of preparation.

The video below presents this message clearly and succinctly.

The mechanical bird’s excellent yet short performance is the result of a long process of vocalization, makeup, and rehearsal. A responsibility as simple as announcing the hours already requires in itself regular preparation, how much more the life that we want to live. The symbolism is clear.

Think of everything you went through life – education, relationships, journeys, work. Aren’t these the things that prepared you for what you are going to do today? Aren’t these the things that prepared you to become who you are now?

Preparation is more important than performance. To be who we are capable of becoming is worth all the long and slow preparation that all of us have to go through. ABCs in grade school, Trigonometry in high school, breaking up with a girlfriend in college – these kinds of experiences may seem unconnected and unimportant but, looking back, I can say that all those small and big events in my life are neither unconnected nor unimportant. They form a long chain of events that led me to where I am now and define the person I have become.

We Christians believe in the afterlife. We believe that at the end of this life we either go to heaven or hell eventually. Life on earth is ephemeral while the next is eternal. What is 80 or 100 years on earth compared to eternity in heaven or hell? We believe that life on earth is but a preparation for the next life.

The question then is: how can we make sure that we’ll spend eternity in heaven? The best way to get a ticket to heaven is to live a “heavenly” life on earth. To live a heavenly life is to live in accordance with God’s will. It is to love and forgive others the way the Father loves and forgives us. It is to treat others the way Jesus treats us. Train yourself to be more loving, forgiving and Jesus-like each day. This is the only way you can prepare yourself for a life of eternal bliss.

A Search Engine For Your Favorite Bible Verses

Top Verses

By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” This is one of my most favorite verses in the bible but just a while ago I was having a hard time locating it.

You must have experienced this too. You are looking for your favorite bible passage. You can remember the words but not the book nor the chapter and verse. And worse, Google and Yahoo give irrelevant and unsorted results to your searches.

It is good to know that there is a new search engine to do just this. It is called Top Verses and the team behind this engine “has analysed thousands of pages of teaching material to determine the most frequently referenced Bible verses.” This means that whenever you search for a keyword or a chapter and verse number you will get the most popular verses first.

Top Verses also provides a list of the most popular books and chapters based on the average number of times they are referenced. How long did it take me to find my most favorite bible verse? Three seconds. Flat. And by the way it’s John 13:35.

Filipino Missionaries in China

I have been following the state of the Catholic church in China mainly through www.asianews.it and from the stories I hear from my own missionary confreres. It always sadden me to hear about the discrimination, persecution, and the torture inflicted upon bishops, priests, nuns and other church people in many corners in China. But it also inspires me to know that despite the risks and threats to their life, many foreign and local missionaries still find a way to share their faith with the Chinese.

A few afternoons ago I met a Filipino missionary who has worked in China since the mid 1990s. Since religious missionaries are banned in the communist republic, he worked there not as a priest but as an English teacher. He shared many insightful and inspiring stories about spreading the word of God in unconventional ways. Continue reading
