After my mass at the Virgen de la Regla Parish Church in Lapu-lapu City yesterday, a good friend of mine sent me an SMS telling me that she saw something that truly touched her – an old beggar giving all the money she had during the Eucharistic celebration.
Aside from the usual offertory collection, there was a second collection during yesterday’s mass. The second collection was intended for the victims of the landslide in Southern Leyte. The beggar emptied her worn purse when the basket for the second collection reached her. My friend knew she was a beggar because the old woman begs regularly at the gate of the church. I cannot read minds, but I’m quite sure the beggar must be thinking that the landslide victims and the survivors needed all the help they could get… including the few coins she had. Neither can I read hearts, but I’m absolutely certain that the mendicant wanted to give all the love she could give.
The beggar has shown once again that Filipinos, even those who have virtually nothing, always respond when their help is needed.

hi! i didn’t know you’re back there already.
very touching post…..
how ironic that there are rich people who looks for the coins in their purses though they have peso bills to give instead…
This is indeed a very touching act of love to be mirrored by others that they may also do the same.
it is relatively easy to give help when one have so much to give in terms of financial & material things,
but it takes a lot more from a person to give when he himself has nothing financially & materially.
He might only be giving a cent away but he is giving it with all his heart…And i believe it makes all the DIFFERENCE!
well.. its sad… people still believe on miracles…. be PRACTICAL!!! i mean… look at the things around you!@!!????? is it not the way we do things???? is there such a thing as “salamat po” at the moment??? wala na yata???? mahal na ng oil sa world market… hirap maniwala sa mga ganyan….
It’s very hard to understand the true essence of giving. It’s hard for us to be completely selfless. We always believe that we’re only humans and we cannot and will not be like God. This act of the beggar is ‘God-like’. But come to think of it, isn’t the beggar also human? Her misfortunes made her live below human conditions and maybe animal-like, but she truly expresses God’s idea on how it is to be human beings.
a very touching entry!
thanks, Father, for sharing this post. it touched my heart. it’s a wake-up call for those who should give their blessings, but don’t do so…
