Just as I was beginning to dislike Google, I found a new search engine that is easy to love. The new object of my affection is called Kratia, a superfast search engine, in which the order of the results are democratically chosen by the users, not by some pagerank based on some computer algorithm. Kratia is now the default search engine of my Firefox browser.

If you thought that Google was a harmless company, just read Google As Big Brother and your eyes might be opened. Each day Google has grown more and more into an internet monopolist. And the thought that a single company can control what the rest of the world may actually read and not read and has the power to access my private data troubles me.

Aside from being ad-free, the best thing about Kratia is that the search results are sorted by the number of votes from users and that anyone can share feedback about any website. Unlike Google, Kratia is self-regulated by users and subject to peer review, and therefore, not controlled by company bosses or administrators. The internet is about freedom, and I’m glad Kratia is trying its best to protect that.
