Impressions

It’s my third day here in Rome. And the Eternal City is very much what I expected it to be – ancient buildings, pasta, cathedrals, cypress trees, trams, bread, cappuccino, cheese, traffic, two-seater cars, wines, fountains, museums, paintings, sculptures, brick roads, and Italians all over the place. Like everywhere else in the world, it’s summer now in Italy. And it is as hot here as it is in the Philippines. But what makes summer in this corner of the globe different from ours is that the sun here does not set until 9 o’ clock in the evening. Yup, you got it right, sunset here is at 9 pm.

My room is everything I wished it would be – it is a bit larger that my room in Banawa and it has a very comfy bed, a huge study table, a book shelf, a foldable study lamp, my own private landline phone, a 24-hour internet connection, a heater for winter, a window large enough for a six-foot man to pass through, a lavatory with potable hot and cold water, and a grand view of northern Rome. Immediately next to my room are the toilet and the bathroom. You can shower in either hot or cold water and there’s a bathtub. Yes, a full bathtub.

How about the food? At breakfast we generally have bread, cheese, butter, margarine, coffee, milk, fresh fruits (like pears, oranges, cherries, apples, berries, etc.), fruit jams, fruit juices, egg, and ham. No rice. During lunch we usually have red meat or fish, bread, fresh fruits, pasta, vegetable salad, and wines (red and white). No rice again. For the evening meal we have pasta, fish, bread, vegetables, fresh fruits, wines and rice! I always thought I wouldn’t like pasta and wines, but I’m starting to do now. Their pasta here is very tasty and the wines, ohh superb. And I am glad I’m beginning to like pasta and wines because they are served practically everywhere and at every meal. Father John Bovenmars, a Dutch MSC priest, said to me that I should like pasta and wines because if I won’t I would have a very miserable life here in Italy.

But who would have a miserable life in such a gorgeous place as Italy?
