Holy Monday – Brokenness

That’s Jonathan. A few years back he earned a degree in Criminology in Manila but chose to leave the Philippines to find work overseas. He is now employed as a contractual domestic helper in the Generalate House of a missionary congregation here in Rome, Italy. I took this shot inside the chapel this afternoon while Jonathan was fixing the broken arm of the crucified Jesus.

Somehow I found myself reflecting on the brokenness experienced by many pinoy migrant workers – their experiences of being fooled by illegal recruiters, their experiences of long separation from loved ones, experiences of being rejected and hurt by harsh employers, experiences of loneliness and cold during winter, et cetera.

If one thing is clear about the Semana Santa it is that Jesus himself, through his passion and death, also had to experience human brokenness to bring about healing and wholeness to the world. He suffered and died so we can have wholly new lives.

How can I get a copy of the featured video? I would like to use it on our exhibit on Holy Thursday in our parish as part of the holy week season.

Elmo, the best way to download online videos is by using the UnPlug plugin (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2254) for Firefox and then view them with the VLC media (www.videolan.org) player.
