In Truth, Peace

The Vatican has recently published the Pontiff’s message for the World Day of Peace, which will be celebrated on the first day of 2006. The theme for the celebration is “In Truth, Peace.” Pope Benedict XVI says that the theme “expresses the conviction that wherever and whenever men and women are enlightened by the splendor of truth, they naturally set out on the path of peace.”

Vatican Message for World Aids Day

Today, we commemorate the World AIDS Day. The principal goal of this yearly commemoration is to make the world aware that HIV/AIDS is humanity’s common problem and that everyone must make the fight against it a priority. World AIDS Day has been celebrated since 1998. This year’s theme is “Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise”, which is an appeal to governments and policy makers to ensure they meet the targets they have agreed to in the fight against HIV and AIDS.

The Transmission of Faith in the Family

Only 213 days left. The 5th World Meeting of the Families (WMF) will be held in Valencia, Spain on 1-9 July 2006. Pope Benedict XVI is expected to attend the event. The last one was successfully held in Manila, Philippines in January 2003. The main aim of the Meeting is to bring together families from all over the world “to pray, talk, learn, share and go into depth on the understanding of the role of the Christian family as a domestic Church and basic unit for evangelisation.” The theme for next year’s WMF is “The Transmission of Faith in the Family.”

Advent: A Time to Renew the World

Today, the season of Advent begins. The word “advent” is from the Latin Adventus, which literally means “coming”. In the Catholic world, Advent is the four-week period of preparation for Christmas, the feast of the Nativity of Jesus. In this season, the faithful are called to prepare themselves worthily to celebrate the anniversary of the Lord’s coming into the world as the incarnate God of love.

Pope’s Weekly Catechism

During his weekly general audience this morning at the Vatican, Pope Benedict XVI shared his reflections on Psalm 135 (136). The Holy Father underlined that the Psalm speaks of creation as reflection of God’s beauty. He also spoke about what the good God has done for His people throughout the course of history.

San Pietro, the Film

Peter had such an riveting life story that I always thought it would make a very good film. Thus when I learned that RaiUno would broadcast a film about the first pope for two nights (24-25 Oct at 2100), I went to the TV room on the dot. San Pietro (Saint Peter) was directed by the Italian filmmaker Giulio Base. In the title role is the septuagenarian Omar Sharif.
