  • Christmas is about sharing love, multiplying joy and doing good things for other people. For some people this means going to an orphanage to donate goods or to some other place where there are people in dire need. You can also live out the spirit of the Season without spending a fortune or without leaving your own home. Here are five simple ways to make your parents feel loved and special this Christmas. 1. Cook for them 2. Pray with them and for them 3. Do all the household chores ... more »
  • In this weekend’s roundup we’ll see how an atheist defends his claim that humanity is better off with religion than without it, find the reasons why everyone is crazy about vampires, learn how to install Ubuntu 9.10, browse more than a hundred brilliant tilt-shift photos, take our first glimpse at the Google Chrome Operating System and understand why couples should pray before making love. An Atheist Defends Religion "Religion's misdeeds may make for provocative history, but the everyda... more »
  • I began writing this post while everyone (including me) was celebrating Manny Pacquiao's win over Miguel Cotto and talking about nothing else but his past and recent victories. Being the first boxer in history to win seven world titles in seven different weight divisions, Manny is now considered by many as one of the world's greatest boxers of all time. Manny is, no doubt, a great boxer. But let us not forget that the "Fighting Pride of the Philippines" also lost three fights. And two the... more »
  • Today is the official start of the month of the Holy Rosary. It was Pope Leo XIII who dedicated the month of October to Our Lady of the Holy Rosary in the late nineteenth century. To pray the rosary is not simply to keep a great Catholic tradition but to remember in prayer the important events or mysteries in the history of our salvation. Each mystery of the Rosary is a meditation on a particular moment in the life and work of Christ. If you do not know how to pray the rosary, you will find t... more »
  • Life is more about preparation than performance. Some performances last only in a matter of seconds but preparations could take years. Think of an Olympian who runs the 100-meter race in less than a minute. In order to dash that fast, a sprinter must train his whole life. Or think of Manny Pacquiao whose fights last less than an hour but demands thousands of hours of preparation. The video below presents this message clearly and succinctly. The mechanical bird's excellent yet short pe... more »
  • Are you the favorite person of anybody? Take a second to let that question sink in. Then think of someone who might consider you a favorite person. Are you absolutely sure that you are indeed that someone's favorite person? I did give this question a serious thought after watching the video below. The first person to come to mind was my mother, but I have two other siblings and she has always maintained that she loves the three of us equally. Then I thought of my nephews and nieces - who migh... more »
  • Twitter is the third most used social network in the planet. It is reported that it gets 55 million monthly visits from all over the world. I first tweeted in October 2007. My very first tweets were updates of my whereabouts and what-abouts. Then in May 2008 I began tweeting inspirational quotes from well-known authors. Five months later I started posting biblical passages as tweets. Last July 16th I posted my first prayer tweet. Since then I've been tweeting nothing else but prayers. My Twit... more »
  • Today is the memorial of Mary as the Sorrowful Mother. Early Christians have identified seven moments of great sorrow in Mary's life, and these are the following: 1. The prophecy of Simeon (Gospel of Luke 2:34) 2. The flight into Egypt (Matthew 2:13) 3. The loss of the child Jesus in Jerusalem (Luke 2:43) 4. The meeting of Jesus and Mary on the way of the cross. (Luke 23:26) 5. The crucifixion ( John 19:25) 6. The taking down of Jesus from the cross. (Matthew 27:57) 7. The burial of Jes... more »
  • The title of the following video is simply "Reach". I can't anymore remember how many times I have used this video in my homilies, talks and presentations. I like it not only because it is short and simple (i.e., fits nicely into my homily time frame) but also because it is meaningful and purposeful. The video brings home the point that when you are disconnected from a power source you can do nothing. The robot mirrors how many of us live our lives. Like the robot, we want to do things by... more »
  • For three Saturdays now I've been going to a place called Paradise Heights. At first glance you couldn't think of anything paradisaical about the place. Built at the foot of the infamous Smokey Mountain, Paradise Heights looks like nothing but a series of unfinished buildings rising above mountains of trash.
