  • Y es, you've read it right. There are two linux distributions that are developed and maintained by Filipinos. These are Bayanihan Linux and Lorma Linux. Bayanihan Linux was initiated by the Advanced Science and Technology Institute (ASTI) in October 2001. ASTI is based in the Diliman campus of the University of the Philippines. You can dowload Bayanihan Linux for free or you can buy the CD with box for 200 pesos (or 100 pesos if you don't need the box). It's cheaper if you go to the ASTI headqu... more »
  • After my mass at the Virgen de la Regla Parish Church in Lapu-lapu City yesterday, a good friend of mine sent me an SMS telling me that she saw something that truly touched her – an old beggar giving all the money she had during the Eucharistic celebration. Aside from the usual offertory collection, there was a second collection during yesterday's mass. The second collection was intended for the victims of the landslide in Southern Leyte. The beggar emptied her worn purse when the basket for ... more »
  • Finally I'm back in the Philippines. I do not care about the trademark traffic in Manila nor about the humidity of this megapolis, it simply feels great to be back in my beloved country. My flight from Rome to Manila took about 18 hours – 14 hours of flying time plus three hours of stopover in Dubai. Four friends met me at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport and they all made me feel so special. On my way to my residence in New Manila, Quezon City I was so impressed at the cleanline... more »
  • Today, Lapu-lapu City celebrates its fiesta. How much do you know about the Virgen de la Regla, the city's patroness? I can still distinctly remember that in my childhood my whole family would visit Lapu-lapu City (a.k.a. Opon) once every November to kiss the Virgen de la Regla. Of course the best part of the yearly pilgrimage was the barge ride from the Ouano wharf in Mandaue City to the island. One thing that really struck my attention was the incalculable number of people lining up and wai... more »
  • I have found another reason to love the Dutch. I have always loved their healthy bicycle lifestyle, their canals and windmills, their swingbridges and colorful tulips, their efficient airport and tasty cheese. And now, their creative sustainable designs. Who else would have thought of turning their surplus manure into a sustainable design and an income-generating souvenir item but the Dutch. The photo that you see in this article is that of the Tulip Box - a tulip bulb packaging made of col... more »
  • One laptop for every impoverished child around the world – that's the dream. The ambitious project, launched by MIT Lab and announced recently by Nicholas Negroponte at the WSIS in Tunis, is to develop a sub-100-dollar laptop. Yes, that affordable. The project aims to revolutionize how the world's children will be educated. Developing countries like the Philippines can benefit so much from this. In fact I wish that instead of purchasing missiles and other weapons for its corrupt military, t... more »
  • During his weekly general audience this morning at the Vatican, Pope Benedict XVI shared his reflections on Psalm 135 (136). You can download and listen to his catechism as an MP3 file by clicking here. The following is a summary of his message: (more...)... more »
  • The name of the television channel is “Aghapy” (which means “love” in the Coptic language). Run by Copts, it is the first Christian satellite TV in Muslim-dominated Egypt. Its main aim is to establish a link among Coptic Christians in Egypt and between Copts who live abroad. Aside from transmitting chants and lectures, the channel will also broadcast worship services, documentaries and some family programming. The channel began airing yesterday. (more...)... more »
  • What is the fastest growing religion in the world? Islam? Kaballah? If you were designer Scott Wilson your answer would be iPod. In his website, Wilson sells a replacement lanyard for the iPod shuffle that turns the music player into a cross necklace. The site claims the design is inspired by the world's obsession and devotion to the iPod. It even has a biblical passage that says “But now bring me a man who plays music. And when the man played music, the groove came upon them (2 Jobs 3:1... more »
