  • Videos have a universal appeal. Like music, they can be understood without specialist knowledge. They are fun. They are popular. So popular that Youtube, the most-visited videosharing site on the planet, now streams an average of over one billion videos a day. Videos shared in Youtube and other videosharing sites usually last less than 10 minutes and they are called video clips or simply clips. Video clips are available in many categories classified according to their content. The most popula... more »
  • A parish website is an online identity of a parish. Its primary purpose is to spread God's Word and update people about the goings-on in the parish. It is a gateway to allow both parishioners and non-parishioners to get to know your parish more and to encourage them to participate in your activities. I've been googling Philippine parish websites these past few days to display them in the CatholicSites.ph directory and, to my dismay, I found out that many of them are poorly-designed and poorly... more »
  • November for the denizens of the city of Lapu-lapu is fiesta month. This means more traffic, more lechon, more balloons, more cotton-candies, more candle-vendors, more pilgrims. Everyone will gravitate of course to the National Shrine of the Nuestra Señora Virgen de la Regla. You almost cannot believe how a little, brown Virgin could attract such a multitude. This year tens of thousands of people will once again brave the heat or get soaked in the rain, queue up for hours, and patiently wait fo... more »

  • This is the Church in action! Unlike other efforts reported in popular media, the Catholic Church in the Philippines is distributing sustainable relief packages to those hit hardest by tropical storm Ondoy. The CBCP news portal reports that the package includes "kitchenwares, family size mat, blanket and mosquito net, canned goods, two big towels, underwear, slippers, toiletries, plates, cups and saucers, and utensils, laundry detergents, and most importantly—one sack of rice."The goal of this... more »
  • Loving Father, you are our shelter and our hope. We come to you with hearts full of trust in your love and mercy. We pray for the victims of tropical storm Ondoy. May those who have lost homes and properties find shelter, enough food and clean water. Comfort those who are traumatized and those who are grieving for the loss of their families, neighbors and friends. Bless those who are sick and those who are injured that their health may be restored and their wounds cured. May you lead all ... more »
  • For three Saturdays now I've been going to a place called Paradise Heights. At first glance you couldn't think of anything paradisaical about the place. Built at the foot of the infamous Smokey Mountain, Paradise Heights looks like nothing but a series of unfinished buildings rising above mountains of trash. [caption id="" align="alignright" width="300" caption="That's me showing a workshop participant how to use the mouse by playing a GCompris game."][/caption] Gawad Kalinga volunteer... more »
  • TV Maria, a Catholic Filipino TV channel, will air a video documentary I recently made for the Diocese of San Jose in Nueva Ecija. The thirty-minute docu is simply titled "Diocese of San Jose" and it depicts the extraordinary and inspiring life of the clergy and laity of the diocese. I was commissioned to write, direct and edit the video in time for the 25th anniversary of the diocese. Here are some screenshots from the video: That's Fr. Remigio Malgapo. He regularly says Mass in the San... more »
  • I was browsing the "Open Source Movies" section of archive.org when I discovered that Lino Brocka's Orapronobis is listed in the collection. An internationally acclaimed masterpiece, Orapronobis graphically shows the horrifying human rights violation committed by various vigilante groups in the Philippines during the Aquino administration. Due to its controversial content, the film never got playtime in public theaters in the Philippines at all. Jose F. Lacaba wrote the script of the film.... more »
