Bamboo Shirts

Bamboos can be used for construction and furniture. You can stir fry bamboo shoots or use its fiber to make paper. And bamboo culms may be cut and hollowed into vases or drinkware, tubes, or pipes for liquids. Of course, you know all that. But did you know that bamboos can also be made into shirts?

I myself didn’t know that you can make shirts, sweaters, scarves, shorts, hats, towels, socks and washcloths out of bamboos until I visited shirtsofbamboo. The website claims that “soft bamboo fiber is softer than the softest cotton, has a natural sheen to the surface and feels similar to silk or cashmere.” And hear this: “protective bamboo fiber clothing is naturally anti-microbial and requires no harmful chemicals. Bamboo apparel is comfortable, thermal regulating and will keep you cooler, drier, warmer and odor free.” As in wow! To think that bamboos are all over the Philippines.

Now I’m wondering why Filipinos are not making a business out of bamboo shirts. Not only are bamboos ubiquitous in the country, but they also make a lot of sense. Bamboos are grown without pesticides or chemicals, are 100% biodegradeable, and are naturally regenerative. If you think about sustainable and eco-friendly industry and lifestyle then you should consider bamboo apparels.
